Principal Areas of Practice

Don commenced practice after graduating in 1970, becoming a partner in Bowie Stringer & McBeath in 1977. That firm subsequently merged with Dougall & Co to become Dougall Stringer in 1980 and Dougall Stringer merged with Macfarlanes in 1999 to become Macfarlane Dougall Stringer, now MDS Law.

After an initial dalliance with litigation in the early years of practice, Don has practised principally in the areas of property, property finance and development, commercial law and trusts.

For many years Don has been solicitor for the University of Canterbury and has developed specialist knowledge in areas of law relating to the activities of the University including education related law, law relating to commercial and property activities, information law and intellectual property law.
Don was instrumental in the transfer, together with two other large Christchurch legal firms, of the firm’s nominee company mortgage investment business to the Canterbury Mortgage Trust and has been a director of the Canterbury Mortgage Trust management company since 1999.

Don is also a trustee of a number of private trusts and spent many years as a trustee of a major charitable trust.
